Full title – Sound: How It Works and How We Work with It. Links and resources for the 5 sessions in the course I’m giving at DEAR on consecutive Thursdays at 1:15, starting on June 13, 2024. This course is basically some greatest hits from various courses I taught at RIT, packaged for a non-technical audience.
Session 1: The Science of Sound
- My slides from the lecture – I can’t post the demo stuff because it was live, but I had multiple requests for notes or a glossary of terms, so I’m posting this pdf. Hope it helps.
- Audacity Website – Main page for the sound editor I’m using in class to demo stuff. It’s open source and free to download, and it’s used by millions of people, so if you’d like to play with sound, it’s a great tool to do so.
- Alba English School website – Answer to the challenge I gave in class, which was to identify where the chart of 44 English phonemes I showed in class came from.
Session 2: Digital Audio Production
- Mics and Speakers – Video I showed in the lecture on how microphones and speakers work
- My slides from the lecture – In for a penny, in for a pound. By request…
Session 3: Synthesis
- Elektron DigitAKG Demo – Video I showed in class demonstrating how a modern sampler can be used
- My slides – You know the drill…
Session 4: Computer Music
- Paul Lansky – Edited interview from Composers and their Compositions series about how Lansky created a successor to the Idle Chatter piece I played in class, which seemed to be everyone’s favorite. Some great insights on the computer music arena.
Session 5: Music in Movies and Video Games
- My Slides – One more time…
